Community, Ownership, and Opportunity – How Gem City Market is Changing West Dayton (and Why That Matters to Us)
By Ryan Ingram, President, Ingram Insurance – Dayton, Ohio
Greetings friends and neighbors — I’m Ryan Ingram of Ingram Insurance, here in our beloved Dayton area. My team and I serve homeowners, real-estate investors, small business owners and renters—many of whom are active in West Dayton, the Salem Avenue corridor, and our evolving community. Today I want to talk about a project I believe in wholeheartedly: the Gem City Market cooperative grocery store at 324 Salem Avenue.
A Market Built by the Community
Gem City Market isn’t just another grocery store. It’s a community- and worker-owned full-service supermarket created by Dayton residents for Dayton residents. The mission is clear: serve, engage and empower neighborhoods by providing affordable, high-quality food in a clean, welcoming environment.
Inside the market you’ll find more than produce, meat, and staples. There’s a teaching kitchen, community room, mini-health clinic, and a café on-site. These aren’t perks; they’re part of building health, connection, and opportunity right here. Alongside Proper Management our agency have used Gem City Market’s community areas to host many first-time homebuyers classes and seminars for the local Dayton residents. We’ve got to experience first hand their presence extends far beyond just groceries. In addition, the GCM is constantly hosting community events, neighborhood meetings, and serving as the conversational catalyst to keep West Dayton’s progress moving forward.
Why This Matters to the Neighborhood (And to Us)
In our work at Ingram Insurance, we see how many pieces tie together: safe homes, thriving businesses, good access to resources, and strong neighborhoods. When a community builds for itself, local dollars stay local, jobs are created, and property owners—investors or homeowners—see stronger value and stability. At this time, this couldn’t be more important to the residents of West Dayton.
Addressing food access isn’t just about groceries; it’s about health outcomes, equity, and the future of the neighborhood. When Gem City Market thrives, it signals something positive: that ownership is local, that community voices matter, and that investment and stability are possible. And that—and this is key—benefits all of us: homeowners, landlords, renters, and small businesses.
My Role and Why I’m Invested
At Ingram Insurance, we insure properties—home, auto, life, and rental property. We work with investors who own rental houses in West Dayton, homeowners who want to protect their biggest asset, and small business owners looking to secure their livelihood; right here on Salem Ave, out into Residence Park, and through North Riverdale.
When I meet with a rental-property client in the Salem Avenue corridor, I don’t just talk about policy; I talk about neighborhood trends. Access to amenities like Gem City Market impacts tenant satisfaction, property value, and even insurance risk. I want our community to succeed, because when you succeed, we all succeed. We can’t keep our neighborhood vibrant and thriving if we wait for someone else to do the work—it starts with us.
How You Can Get Involved
-
Shop local. Visit Gem City Market at 324 Salem Ave, open daily.
-
Consider membership. Become a member-owner to keep ownership in our community. Join here.
-
Spread the word. Tell your friends, your landlords, your tenants, and your neighbors that this store is local—built for us, by us.
-
Pick up trash. If you see trash where it isn’t supposed to be, pick it up. We cannot rely on city services to keep our streets, alleys, and yards clean.
-
Use your property/investor influence. If you own rental units nearby, highlight Gem City Market as an amenity for tenants.
-
Talk to us. If you’re a property owner or investor and want to review your insurance—especially in this neighborhood context—our door is open.
Final Thoughts
I believe in the power of community to build its future. Gem City Market is more than a grocery store—it’s a symbol of what we can do when we come together, invest in each other, and reclaim our neighborhoods.
If you live, work or invest in Dayton—especially in West Dayton or along the Salem Avenue corridor—thank you for being part of the story. Your choice to support local business, to engage, to shop, and to invest makes a difference.
At Ingram Insurance, we’re proud to stand beside you in this journey: protecting homes, protecting investments, and protecting the promise of a thriving community.
